Why can’t Tacos be healthy(er)?

I love no so healthy foods as much as the next person…but when I see an opportunity to make the recipe a little more healthy.. I’m gonna go for it!

Healthy taco option #1: Make your own seasoning! (and its way easier than you think)

Have you ever read the ingredients list on taco seasoning mix?

I’ve read worse ingredients list. BUT I have all the spices I need in my cabinet..why buy some packet of spices with extra ingredients that are unnecessary?

I don’t actually measure this out, I just sprinkle out how much I know I like. I am very good at seasoning things…but if you aren’t sure about it then I’d measure it out. However, here is my taco seasoning recipe for 1 pound of beef.

  • 1 TBS chili powder
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1tsp onion powder
  • optional: 1 tsp cilantro (I just used dried)

If you feel like you need more once this is all in, add more chili powder.

PS: Yes I buy my spices in the hispanic section of the grocery store. I’m not sure why they’re in a completely different section (at least around here)…but they’re good quality and MUCH cheaper!!

Healthy taco option #2: whole wheat tortillas

WHY IS WHITE BREAD STILL A THING??? I don’t understand. You don’t have to get a fancy crazy brand; Food Lion brand has whole wheat tortillas, tortilla chips, bread, pasta etc. This is a simple change that takes zero effort.

Healthy taco option #3: Leaner meat and/or grassed options.

I know this option will cost you more money. However, I take great pride in choosing high quality meats. You can just look at the different types of meat in the grocery store and tell the quality is different by the color. However, again, I know not everyone will be able to go for this option all the time.

Healthy taco option #4: Strain the grease out!

I like to think everyone does this already, but ya never know. This will cut down on the fat intake by a TON.

Put it all together? DELICIOUS! I mean come on…who doesn’t love tacos? but I love tacos even more when I don’t feel quite so bad about them!
